Who doesn’t likes to get pampered in a salon and treat our skin and hair with care – of course this comes at a cost! We also know that in early days …..our parents and their parents and theirs.. were able to take care of their skin and hair right at home- when there were NO Salons. So, here I am happy to share my experience of a hair spa @ home. I know this would take time, so the best day would be when you have an off or you are at home and have enough time to care for yourself. Here’s how you can plan a hair spa @ home……
Step 1: Wash your Hair
To begin your in-house hair spa, you need to start with clean hair, so that the ingredients we use later get absorbed and do the required job. So wash your hair, to get rid of any dirt or oils, with a mild shampoo or any shampoo you prefer. I have used Moroccon Oil Shampoo.
Step 2: Oiling
As our mothers and grand mothers swear by this method to get beautiful long hair, let me tell you Dadi Maa’s nuske work – Take any oil, preferably coconut or olive oil, about 2-3 tablespoons in a bowl and warm it (through double boiling method, or on a pan or in a microwave). Once warm, add about 4-5 drops of tea tree oil (if you do not fund Teatree oil then you may add juice of half a lemon). Tea tree oil is an essential oil which is beneficial in treating various hair related problems like dandruff, itchiness, frizz, split ends, dry scalp and maintains in restoring pH levels of your scalp. Moreover it is anti fungal and anti bacterial. Now apply this oil mix to your scalp and hair roots only. Gently massage the warm oil with your finger tips to your scalp for about 5-10 minutes.
Step 3: Moisturize your Lengths- Hair Mask
Now take your favorite hair mask or conditioner about 2-4 tablespoons depending on your hair length in a bowl. To this add 1 tablespoon of aloevera gel, 2-3 tablespoons of curd, a teaspoon of your favorite hair serum.
A teaspoon of sweet almond oil or 2-3 vitamin E oil from capsules can also be added. This is completely optional depending on availability. You may add either of these two as Vitamin E oil is good for nourishing hair, improves hair growth and is a natural anti oxidant. (I was running short of these capsules so I went ahead without it).
Now mix all these to form a thick paste and apply this to the lengths of your hair and make bun or tie your hair. Make sure to avoid your scalp/roots as this homemade hair mask contains serum and conditioner which are not meant for scalp.
Step 4: Steam with Hot Towel
For steaming your hair at home, the best possible way is to place a wet towel in microwave for 2 minutes or soak a clean towel in hot water and wring it out so that water is not dripping. Now wrap the warm towel around your head and cover all hair. You may keep this for about 10-15 minutes at least.
Step 5: Shampoo and Rinse
Wash off with your favourite shampoo for clean shiny and nourished hair. If you feel the need to moisturise you may use a mild conditioner and rinse. Simply air dry your hair, and there you just got yourself a great hair spa @ home at no extra expense and your convenience.
Do try this easy breezy hair spa this Sunday and do share your feedback!!
