Once in a small town, lived Mr.Krishnan with his wife and their son. Mr.Krishnan was an accountant, earned a very respectful life and was full of contentment and joy. He had no grudges nor frustration. He was a God-loving person, very religious in his actions too.
As years passed by, Mr.Krishnan retired from his job. He was too excited about his retirement, since now he will spend maximum time with his better half. His son was married and all four members in the family were happily staying together. Mr.Krishnan received a hefty amount at his retirement. He gifted some amount to his son; while he reserved rest of the money for a world trip with his wife.
Everything was picture perfect for Mr. Krishnan. But destiny had different plans. Mr.Krishnan’s wife dies of a cardiac arrest, leaving Mr.Krishnan all alone. The world tour, the plan to spend time together; everything came to a standstill. Mr.Krishnan was no more a jolly person, just a quiet person expecting nothing from anyone. Every month, he gave his pension (money) to his son, who took care of his basic needs.
One day, the son requested his father to give him the money that he had reserved for the world trip. Mr.Krishnan without any hesitation, gives away that money to his son thinking that his son is taking care of him and now what will he do with this money.
As soon as the son gets the money, he and his wife start behaving strangely. The daughter-in-law who used to serve him hot tea every morning with newspaper, now was hesitant in serving tea. Mr.Krishnan ignored, he started preparding tea for himself every morning. Slowly, the daughter-in-law started serving him stale food instead of freshly cooked meals which she used to serve earlier. Things were changing and were not the same anymore for Mr.Krishnan. One day, he over-heard his son and daughter-in-law saying that he had become a burden for them. Mr.Krishnan was badly hurt on this. He understood that the world is materialistic and follows the one which has power or money. His only support was his wife, who was no more and this pain was weakening him. That day, he slept without dinner but slept with a heavy heart.
Deep in his sleep, Mr.Krishnan met his wife and he narrated all the incidents and the way he was being treated. Mrs.Krishnan smiled and said, “Don’t worry. Things will be alright. You will soon get what you need“. Mr.Krishnan woke up in a shock and heard the alarm ringing. It was 7AM in the morning. He left for his morning walk thinking about the dream. He sat on the bench in the park and thought that he loved his wife so much and he missed him badly. His wife was everything for him. If his wife said that he will get what he needs, then it means he soon will be with his wife. He started to think on how his life is going to end. He wasn’t scared of death but was worried on how he will die. He had no heart disease and was a fit person. He thought the only way he can end his life is by consuming poison, a quick relief 🙂 Gearing up courage, he checked his pocket, he found one big note. With full determination, he headed towards the chemist shop with a smile.
Mr.Krishnan reached the chemist shop and found that the shop was yet to be opened. He sat at a bench opposite to the chemist shop eagerly waiting for the chemist owner. He was desperate to execute his plan and wanted to meet is wife quickly. Few minutes later, a boy stops by him and urges him to buy a lottery ticket. Mr.Krishnan looked at the kid and said, “Kid, I don’t play lottery. I am a simple man. Leave me alone. I can give you 10 bucks if you need money, but I don’t need the ticket”. The kid paused and said, “Uncle, since you haven’t played it before; try now. Please buy one ticket. I don’t want money for free…Please buy the ticket…You are my first customer. It is only for 10 bucks“.
Mr.Krishnan thought for a while and couldn’t say no further. He agreed to buy a lottery ticket and gave him his big note. The kid asked for change and at the same time, the chemist shop was now open for customers. Mr.Krishnan hurried to the chemist shop, purchased some sleeping pills and gave 10 bucks to the kid. The kid thanked Mr.Krishnan and asked him to meet him tomorrow at the same time. Mr.Krishnan knew that he was no more lucky, and he was fully charged to meet is wife. As he walked back home, he couldn’t forget the kid’s innocent face. He wished for a grandson like him, but started to think as to why a kid of this young age sell lottery tickets and not go to school. Though he seemed poor but he was not selfish, that is the reason he did not take the money for free but earned it by selling that one ticket.
Mr.Krishnan decided that in case, by any chance if he wins that lottery, he will give the entire money to that kid. He also decided to postpone his suicidal plan for the next day. The plan sounded great, Mr.Krishnan somehow spent the day, ate some food and slept with a slight relief that night.
The next morning, Mr.Krishnan hurried to meet the kid. The kid was waiting for him. They both went to the lottery booth where the numbers were displayed. Both of them started matching the numbers and guess what, Mr.Krishnan – who had lost faith- had won first prize – a hefty money which was double the money that he had received at his retirement. The kid danced with joy. Mr.Krishnan couldn’t believe his eyes. He asked the kid to keep the money but the kid refused. He now recalled his dream where his wife said that things will be ok again and he will get what he needs. He changed his plan now, no more suicide. He decided to keep the lottery money and adopt that orphan kid; and no more living with his son and daughter-in-law.
There is someone above all of us who is watching our deeds round the clock. As the saying goes and in one of the favorite songs by Shawn Mendes… “you reap what you sow…” 🙂
